Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: What They Mean for Your Business

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: What They Mean for Your Business

Google AI Overviews are the AI answer at the top of a normal results page. Google AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational search that answers an entire research journey in place. Both move the decision off your website and into Google’s answer, which means being cited inside that answer, rather than ranking a link beneath it, is now the goal.

Google didn’t bolt AI onto the side of search. It rebuilt the middle of it. Once you understand the two surfaces, and that they’re variations on the same shift, you know exactly what to optimise for.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode: what’s the difference?

AI Overviews are the generated answer box that now appears above the classic blue links for a large share of queries. The ten links still exist underneath, but fewer people reach them. Where an Overview appears it cuts the #1 result’s click-through rate by about 58%, and Overviews already show on roughly one in four searches and the majority of question queries.

AI Mode goes further. It’s a fully conversational search experience: you ask a question, get a synthesised answer, ask a follow-up, refine. It’s closer to ChatGPT than to a list of links. Google reports AI Mode has passed a billion users with queries more than doubling each quarter. In AI Mode there often is no “results page” to rank on at all. There’s an answer, and the sources it chose to build from.

So the two surfaces aren’t really rivals. Overviews bring AI into the results page, AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation, and both reward being the source rather than the link.

What do they mean for your business?

The same thing, with different intensity: the moment a buyer decides is moving into Google’s answer, and your job is to be in it. A classic ranking strategy optimises for a click that, increasingly, 68% of searches never make. An answer strategy optimises to be the source Google synthesises from.

The good news is you don’t need two separate playbooks. Both surfaces draw on the same foundations: a clear entity, authority signals, and answer-first content. Ranking still helps, though less than it did: only about 37% of AI Overview citations now come from the top 10, down from roughly 76% a study earlier. AI Mode adds one emphasis. Because it handles follow-up questions across a whole topic, topical depth matters more than ever, which means covering a subject thoroughly rather than just a single keyword. That shift is the subject of topic authority beats keywords.

This is really just Google catching up to where ChatGPT and Perplexity already were, which is why the response is the same GEO and AEO work, not a Google-specific trick. For the foundations, see what GEO is and what AEO is; for why the click is vanishing, zero-click search explained.

Optimising for Google’s answer surfaces alongside the assistants is the work I do. If you want to be the source Google’s AI builds from, start here.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode? AI Overviews are the AI answer at the top of a normal results page. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational search that answers follow-ups in place. Overviews bring AI into classic search; AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation.

How do they change things for my business? Both move the decision off your website into Google’s answer. Overviews cut top-result CTR by around 58%, and AI Mode can answer a whole research journey without a visit. Being cited becomes the goal.

Do I optimise differently for each? The fundamentals are the same: clear entity, authority, answer-first content on ranking pages. AI Mode rewards topical depth more, but it’s not a separate playbook.

Frequently asked

> What's the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews are the AI-generated answer that appears at the top of a normal Google results page for a query. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational search experience, closer to ChatGPT, where you ask follow-ups and Google synthesises across sources. Overviews bring AI into classic search; AI Mode replaces the results page with a conversation.

> How do they change things for my business?

Both move the moment of decision off your website and into Google's answer. Where an AI Overview appears it cuts the top result's click-through rate by around 58%, and AI Mode can answer an entire research journey without a single visit. Being cited inside those answers becomes the goal, not ranking a link beneath them.

> Do I optimise differently for AI Mode than for AI Overviews?

The fundamentals are the same: a clear entity, authority and answer-first content on pages that already rank. AI Mode rewards depth across a topic (because it handles multi-step, follow-up questions), so topical authority matters even more, but you're not running two separate playbooks.
