What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? And How It Differs from GEO and SEO

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so an answer engine (Google’s AI Overviews, a featured snippet, a voice assistant, “People Also Ask”) selects it as the direct answer to a question. SEO competes to rank a link and GEO competes to be the source an AI cites. AEO competes to be the answer on the screen.

If you’ve heard GEO, AEO, SEO and AIO thrown around as if they’re one thing, you’re not wrong to be confused. They overlap heavily. But they optimise for different moments, and knowing which is which is the difference between chasing rankings nobody clicks and being the answer your buyer actually reads.

Why does AEO suddenly matter?

Because the click is disappearing. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of Google searches ended without a single click. The user got the answer on the results page and moved on. Where an AI Overview appears, it cuts the #1 result’s click-through rate by about 58%. You can rank first and still watch the traffic evaporate, because the answer is being read, not clicked.

And answer features aren’t a corner case. AI Overviews now appear on roughly one in four Google searches, and on most question and “how-to” queries. That’s exactly where buyers ask “who’s best for X?” or “how does Y work?”. AEO is the work of being the business that answer names.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what’s actually different?

The shorthand worth keeping: SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you the answer, GEO gets you cited.

One distinction most explainers skip is that GEO has a precise origin. It was coined in a November 2023 Princeton-led paper that found the right optimisation lifts a source’s visibility in generative answers by up to 40%. AEO has no single author. It grew out of the SEO industry as featured snippets and voice search matured, then took off once AI answers became default. So treat anyone selling “the one AEO trick” with suspicion. There’s no secret formula, just a discipline. (For the generative side in depth, see what GEO is and how it works.)

What actually gets your content picked as the answer?

This is where evidence beats opinion. Three levers consistently work.

First, ranking still helps, but it is no longer the gate it was. Ahrefs found about 37% of AI Overview citations come from the top 10 organic results, against roughly 76% in its earlier study. Answer engines still draw on pages that earned their place, and they don’t reward businesses that skipped the fundamentals. But the majority of citations now come from outside the ranked list, which is why the deeper work is what separates the firms that end up named first in their niche.

Second, structure for extraction: a direct, self-contained answer a machine can lift in 40 to 60 words, and headings phrased as the exact question being asked.

Third, give the engine something worth quoting. Original substance, meaning real statistics, named sources and quotes, is among the strongest signals the Princeton study found for getting pulled into a generated answer. And brand mentions increasingly matter more than backlinks. Ahrefs found web mentions correlate roughly 3× more strongly with AI visibility than links do.

Then there’s the thing vendors oversell: schema markup. It helps machines understand and categorise your content, but Google’s John Mueller has been blunt that structured data “won’t make a site rank higher by itself”. Schema is a legibility tool, not a ranking lever. If someone’s pitch for getting you into AI answers is “we’ll add schema,” that’s a foundation, not the building.

Does AEO replace SEO? And where does Hong Kong stand?

No. AEO sits on top of solid SEO and points it at answer-first surfaces, and GEO points it at generative ones. Treat them as one system, with entity clarity, authority and genuinely useful content serving all three, rather than three competing projects.

On Hong Kong specifically, there’s no reliable HK benchmark for AI Overview prevalence yet. But the buyer behaviour behind these global numbers is the same here. Hong Kong SMEs and professional-services buyers increasingly research bilingually through ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers before they ever contact you. The absence of local data is itself the opportunity. Almost no Hong Kong business is deliberately optimising for it, so the answer positions in your category are still open. To see what that looks like in practice, read how a Hong Kong law firm became Perplexity’s first-named source.

Keeping all this aligned as engines keep changing how they answer is sustained work, which is why most businesses are absent from the answer. See how I do GEO and AEO for Hong Kong businesses →

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO? No. AEO optimises your content to be the direct answer in answer engines: featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice, “People Also Ask.” GEO optimises it to be cited as a source inside a generative AI answer like ChatGPT or Perplexity. They overlap, but the win is different: being the answer versus being named in the answer.

Does AEO replace SEO? No, it’s built on it, but ranking alone no longer carries you. Around 37% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 pages, down from roughly 76% a study earlier, so SEO is the precondition and not the guarantee.

Do I need schema markup to win AI Overviews? It helps machines read your content but isn’t a ranking factor. Google’s John Mueller says schema “won’t make a site rank higher by itself.” Answer-first content and a top-10 ranking matter far more.

Why is my traffic falling even though I still rank well? Because 68% of searches now end without a click, and AI Overviews cut the #1 result’s click-through rate by about 58%. People are getting the answer without visiting. Visibility now matters as much as clicks.

How do I measure AEO if I’m not getting the clicks? By share of answer boxes and AI citations, brand mentions, and the conversion quality of the AI-referred visitors you do get, not by traffic alone.

Frequently asked

> Is AEO the same as GEO?

No. AEO optimises your content to be the direct answer in answer engines, featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice and 'People Also Ask.' GEO optimises it to be cited as a source inside a generative AI answer like ChatGPT or Perplexity. They overlap, but the win is different: being the answer versus being named in the answer.

> Does AEO replace SEO?

No, it is built on it, though ranking alone no longer carries you. Ahrefs found around 37% of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in Google's top 10, down from roughly 76% in its earlier study, so strong SEO is still the precondition but not the guarantee. AEO points your SEO at answer-first surfaces; it doesn't replace the work underneath.

> Do I need schema markup to win AI Overviews?

It helps machines read and categorise your content, but it is not a ranking factor. Google's John Mueller has said structured data 'won't make a site rank higher by itself.' Answer-first content and a top-10 ranking matter far more than schema.

Because 68% of searches now end without a click, and AI Overviews cut the click-through rate of the #1 result by about 58%. People are getting the answer without visiting. Visibility now matters as much as clicks.

> How do I measure AEO if I'm not getting the clicks?

By share of answer boxes and AI citations, brand mentions, and the conversion quality of the AI-referred visitors you do get, not by traffic alone.
